I’ve been here in Guate almost two months now, so I thought I would share with you some of my favorite things. This is such a special country that has taught me so much!

The hospitality: I have never experienced hospitality so intentional and deep. You knock on someone’s door, it is a pleasure and excitement for you to be at their house. You are invited in and you are offered food and a drink. They celebrate things well, they love to throw celebrations and value the people placed in their life. They are interruptible and hosting you or serving you is not an inconvenience to the people of Guatemala. Everyone knows their neighbors and pursues them well.

The views: Guatemala is BEAUTIFUL. The land of many trees as it is called! Endless trees and volcanos and mountains and coffee fields!

The hunger for the Lord: There is a harvest here in Guatemala. The people here are ready to know more about Jesus, and many have some of the most receiving hearts I’ve ever seen. It’s beautiful.

The colors: Guatemala is a COLORFUL country. They love to paint things and wear clothes of vibrant colors and patterns. Buildings and homes are painted with bright colors. Women’s traditional clothing is full of varieties of colorful fabrics. Even a lot of the food here includes bright colors.

The adventures: Never in my life have I gone on so many adventures. Volcano hiking, cliff jumping, drives up the mountain, walks through the markets, chicken bus rides, trying new coffee shops, and more. It’s a blast.

The families: Family is so important to the people of Guatemala. A lot of times instead of “How are you?” it’s more appropriate to ask “How is your family?”. In so many families there are always fun gatherings and celebrations going on. Siblings look out for each other, cousins are besties, and many parents care so deeply for their children.

The sunsets: Due to the climate the clouds are gorgeous. Mixed with the mountains and bright sun is perfect.

The joy: Many of the people I get to visit in the villages wrestle with pain and poverty. Joy is so present in this country amidst darkness. Kids run barefoot in the streets with the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen, just so excited that the gringas came to play with them in the park. Women opening up their homes to us when they have tortillas to make and children to care for, but their greatest joy is to love us well. Guatemala is a country that cultivates joy well.

Guate has a special place in my heart. The people, culture, and presence of the Lord has impacted me greatly.

Bye for now,

MG
